I flexed my hands, my knuckles popping, as I stared at the woman across from me. Her expression mirrored the terror I felt.

I’d lied to Cameron when I told her I didn’t notice anything different about her after she removed the necklace. There was a difference but nothing alarming. Her aura was brighter, more defined, but I’d expected that. The amount of power in the amulet would subdue anyone, myself included. I’d wager that it would even dilute the power of an angel or demon if they were to come in contact with it.

It was for that very reason that I placed that necklace in her bag. Holding it made me feel uncomfortable.

But now, after what I’d just witnessed, I realized the intentional purpose of the necklace. Cameron’s father, whoever he was, knew what he was doing when he told her aunt to never let her take it off.

“Time walker,” she delineated, the words seemingly sticking to her tongue like taffy. “How?”

I shook my head and shrugged. “I only know of one other person who can do that and he’s a Nephilim.”

Her face lit up. “Okay. Well, then we need to go to him. Maybe he can tell me what’s going on here.”

I lowered my gaze to the floor and let out a heavy sigh. “We can’t. He’s incredibly difficult to find unless he wants to be found.”

Cameron threw her arms in the air. “This is such bullshit!”

She definitely had a point. One I couldn’t argue with.

“So what do I do?”

What I should’ve told her was to put the necklace back on, but I couldn’t bring myself to do it. I knew, beyond a shadow of a doubt, she was Covenant. Not only because of her bloodline, but because like all other Guardians, I felt the tethering connection that bound our kind together. With Cameron, however, there was something more. I knew it the instant I met her, but I couldn’t quite pinpoint what it was. I simply thought it was because I was attracted to her, but now…

If I told her to wear the necklace, she would lose more than her special gift. The emergence of her Guardian abilities were evident. She’d kept pace with me in the garden and she didn’t even wince when I grabbed her wrist. She was already growing stronger by the second.

No. There was only one solution to this dilemma. We needed to go to the source.

“Is your aunt home?”

Cameron reached into her back pocket and began to type. I watched in awe at how fast her fingers flew across the glass surface. She was going to be a powerful Guardian once she was trained. If she was trained.

For several moments, we sat in silence as she stared at her phone. It vibrated and her shoulders sank down as she slid on to a barstool at the kitchen island. “She’s not. She says she’s visiting her friend Coral.”

“Coral. As in Coral King?”

Cameron shook her head and shrugged. “I’m not sure.”

A name like Coral was
